Thread Cutting Screws

Thread cutting screws are used in existing pilot holes to create threads typically in wood or metal.

There are a few different types including Type 1, Type F, Type 23, and Type 25. The different types reference the style of the cutting edge as shown below. The type used will be dependent on the specific application.

Thread Cutting Screw Types

Type 1
Fine machine screw thread with blunt tapered point. Has one straight cutting edge. Sometimes referred to as Type D.

Type F
Coarse machine screw thread with blunt tapered point. Has multiple straight cutting edges.

Type 23
Fine machine screw thread with blunt tapered point. Has a triangular cutting edge which is useful for chip clearing. Sometimes referred to as type T.

Type 25
Coarse machine screw thread with blunt tapered point. Has a larger triangular cutting edge which is useful for chip clearing. Sometimes referred to as type BT.
