There are many different types of lock nuts available, and the right one for your job depends on your specific application and how accessible the area is. A lock nut is tightened onto a bolt to secure it, preventing the nut from backing off or loosening under torque and vibration. Below we look at the most popular types.
Nylon Insert Lock Nuts (Nyloc)
These feature a nylon insert ring inside the nut that grips the bolt thread to hold it firmly in place. While the insert is typically a natural nylon colour, it may sometimes be coloured depending on the manufacturer or grade. As the bolt threads through, it forms a tight fit in the nylon that stops it from coming loose.

Serrated Flange Lock Nuts
This style features an integrated flange with serrations on the underside. Once fully tightened, these serrations bite into the surface to lock the nut in place.

Jam Nuts
Jam nuts resemble standard hex nuts but are much thinner. They are designed to be used alongside a second nut, tightening directly against each other to lock both in position.

2 Way Lock Nuts (Centre Lock Nuts)
These nuts use a distorted thread in the centre of the nut body to create a locking action automatically as it’s tightened. They typically feature a small symbol stamped on the side to identify them as a 2-way lock nut.

All Metal Top Lock Nuts (Stover Lock Nuts / Prevailing Torque Lock Nut)
Featuring a coned or collared top, these all-metal nuts rely on distorted threads near the top collar to grip the bolt securely.

Flex Lock Nuts
These all-metal lock nuts feature slots cut into the round top collar. As the nut is tightened, these slots expand outward to generate the locking pressure.

K-Lock Nuts (Keps Nuts)
This hex nut comes equipped with a free-spinning external tooth lock washer attached. It saves time by eliminating the need to handle a separate washer during assembly.
