Bolts are essential components in countless applications, from home projects to heavy industrial machinery. Choosing the right bolt can significantly impact the durability and safety of a project. This article will explore some of the most popular types of bolts including their specific features and common uses.

Hex Bolts

Hex bolts, aka hex cap screws, are one of the most widely used fasteners and get their name from their six sided head which is a hex shape. The fully threaded hex caps are referred to as Tap Bolts. These bolts are versatile and commonly available in different sizes and materials. The most common materials are steel, stainless steel, and brass. Some of the less common materials we can typically source are titanium, silicon bronze, Ni-Cu, and nylon. Hex bolts are ideal for construction, machinery, and automotive applications since they have a strong hold in wood, metal, and plastics.

Carriage Bolts

Standard carriage bolts have a round, dome-shaped head with a square neck. Another less common version of a carriage bolt is a flat head. Flat head carriage bolts with a short neck are referred to as ‘overhead door’ fasteners used for garages. Standard carriage bolts are designed to be used with wood. The square neck below the head prevents the bolt from spinning when tightened. This makes them perfect for applications where stability is important and they have a low profile which makes them more aesthetically pleasing.

Lag Bolts

Lag bolts, or lag screws, are heavy duty fasteners that have a hex head and are known for their thick, coarse threads. They’re designed to be driven into wood without a nut, providing exceptional holding power for structural applications. Lag bolts are popular with a galvanized finish for the corrosion resistant properties used in outdoor applications.

Eye Bolts

Eye bolts feature a looped head that allows for the attachment of ropes, cables, or chains. The loop can be bent or forged. They are commonly used for securing or lifting loads. Dependent on the style and material of the eye bolt, it will have a different weight that it is rated for. The shank is typically partially threaded but some can be bought in blanks (plain, without threads).

Anchor Bolts

Anchor bolts, sometimes referred to as hook bolts, are specifically designed to attach objects to concrete. Available in L-shaped, J-shaped, or straight designs, they are used in construction and masonry projects to secure structural elements to concrete foundations. Most anchor bolts are a custom manufactured part. You can send us your drawings and we can get them manufactured specifically for you!

U-Bolts

U-bolts are shaped like the letter “U” and have threads on both ends. These bolts are often used to secure round objects (such as pipes, tubes, or rods) to flat surfaces. Their design allows them to wrap around cylindrical objects, providing a firm hold. Some uses will include a metal plate which is used with nuts to keep it secure.

Flange Bolts

Flange bolts have a flange under their head which is an integrated washers that distributes pressure evenly and eliminates the need for a separate washer. This makes them ideal for applications that require a tight and secure fit. We have a full line of grade 5 hex serrated flange bolts in stock at excellent prices. Flange bolts can also be provided in grade 8 or non-serrated flange bolts.

Overall, selecting the right type of bolt for your project depends on factors like material compatibility, load requirements, and environmental conditions. Whether you’re building a wooden deck or assembling heavy machinery, it’s important to understand the strengths and uses of these popular bolt types.
